Oh right. I really wanted to like this one… especially since I was so pleasantly surprised by the Cognac Cask from Glenlivet.

Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. This sensational Caribbean reserve single malt from Glenlivet will remind you of the Caribbean upon the first sniff. Pours amber with pear, apple, and banana tones. The inviting palate offers caramel, toffee, citrus, vanilla, and melon notes. It's medium-bodied and mildly sweet with a long finish. Savour solo after a meal.Rum is hot right now — at least in the world of whiskey it is, where rum casks are being used in all manner of new whiskey releases, including expressions from Dewar’s, Tullamore D.E.W., and now The Glenlivet, which finishes a non-age-stated single malt in Caribbean rum casks for an undetermined length of time. By using the Service, and by creating an account you represent, warrant and confirm that you are of legal age. The palate is quite rummy, with a strong butterscotch note, plus elements of coconut, tiki spices, and honey grahams. There’s a light lemon influence, layered atop a significant base of grainy malt — this is a young whiskey, but it’s not too young. The finish is quite sweet and buttery, with lingering honey notes, some cloves, and cinnamon. But, after several years of the world being in a rather “staycation” lead model, those visiting figures have been down recently. On a beautiful day last year I drove through to Glenfiddich distillery. Now, if you’ve been before you will know that the place has a pretty large car park… with only seven cars in it! The same day I stopped at Glen Livet; I was the only car there!

In 2015 it was assessed that 80% of Scotland’s food and drink overseas export was taken up by Scotch! Impacting on approximately 200 overseas markets, with France then the USA topping the tables, that’s one single item – OK, yes, from over 140 producers – but still it’s just whisky. On the whole, it’s an interesting spirit that, for the most part, opens up some curious mixing possibilities. On the nose: Apples (it is a Speyside!). It has that common edge of a liquid from that region, slightly orchard-like, with perhaps a freshly cut farm field, straw? Hay? With a slight hard candy sweetness, there is a pineapple juice hint…. I think. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect.

At the heart of The Glenlivet is the Sample Room, our creative epicentre. A place of continuous improvement and creation, this is where our makers spend their time crafting, testing and refining our whisky until they achieve the finest balance. To create whisky with a tropical feel, our makers finished a portion of our smooth whisky in barrels that previously held Caribbean rum. The result is a well balanced and exceptionally smooth whisky. Single malt, meet summer." - The Glenlivet Don't like it. Strange on the nose and odd aftertaste. I'm not a rum fan but it's not rum I am tasting here (and I am tasting it right now as I type). Whiskybase B.V. (“Whiskybase”, “we” or “us”, company details below) offers a whisky enthusiasts online platform that provides its members access to the most comprehensive, transparent and trusted resource of whisky bottles and allows and stimulates its members to contribute information about whisky bottles to the platform (“Service”). So, Scotland’s visiting tourists impact heavily on the Scotch whisky industry, and as a product Scotch whisky hits heavily on the world’s trading market, so really my opening sentence should not have been a question but a statement of fact: Scotland makes and sells the stuff, and because of that, people visit.

So, continuing to look (as I have been) at some entry level drams, and because I mentioned the distillery above, I’m going to have a wee peek at what I would actually consider a “fun dram.” What’s that? Well, it’s a whisky that I think is maybe just that: it’s something not to be taken too seriously, but still enjoyed in the right way.It is winter, I’m sat with a dram by the log burner, curled up on a large old leather chair, probably allowing the Laphroiag in the glass to do much of the thinking… and whilst I think that – although a perhaps confusing entry to this article – most readers would be able to grasp what I mean. Palate: Fairly viscous for a measly 40% ABV. There are generic notes of ruminess, along with caramel, coconut milk, and sugarcane. Wood esters come through fairly distinctly, at least considering how most of this batch seems younger than 12 years old. This makes me wonder if part of the casks used were virgin oak.
