The margins are neutralized at the GPU-limited 4K resolution, but still some impressive gains at 1080p and 1440p in this title.

JEDEC finalizes DDR5 standard: Terabyte-sized DDR5-6400

If we recalculate using the memory tested here, the Trident Z RGB, DDR4-3600 CL14 and DDR5-6000 CL36 we find a similar margin using the Core i9-12900K and Aorus Elite AX, basically DDR5 ends up costing 20% more. Then from 2400 to 2933 we see a further 12% increase and at that point DDR4 is maxed out with 3200, 3600, and even 4000 only offering a few extra frames. Based on pricing alone (and the fact that availability is near non-existent), DDR5 makes little sense for most. To increase efficiency of memory reads, DDR5 enhances the burst length to 16 bytes for systems with a 64-byte cache line and optionally to 32 bytes for machines featuring a 128-byte cache line. To further improve performance, DDR5 brings better refresh schemes as well as an increased bank group count with the same number of banks per group.

In total we spent a few weeks testing 41 games and we'll take a look at the side-by-side comparison across all those games in a second. But if we look at an average graph, calculated using the geomean, we see that on average DDR5 memory offered just a 3% boost at 1080p, 2% at 1440p and then one percent at 4K. Corsair did provide a faster DDR4 kit but it didn't work on our Z690 board, so we maxed out at DDR4-4000 with just shy of 60 GB/s. This suggests that as usual, when factoring in prices CL16 DDR4-3600 to CL18 DDR4-3800 is going to make the most sense. As for DDR5, there's little point investing in it right now unless you simply want the best of the best, at which point you're going for 6000+ spec memory which costs roughly the same amount as the 12900K processor. We see little reason to go with the more affordable 4800 to 5600 memory if you're gaming, especially given you're probably going to be GPU limited more often than not. clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 34-242-207-243_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604439174-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 34-242-207-243_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604441206-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 34-242-207-243_s-23-203-249-81_ts-1604441267-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 34-242-207-243_s-23-203-249-90_ts-1604425484-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 34-242-207-243_s-23-203-249-90_ts-1604425610-clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, g33b4vqccuqwcx5bx22q-p8kovq-e038e0c0c-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, g33b4vqccuqxax5bstpa-p4rsfx-bd0382a30-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, g33b4vqccuqxax5btyeq-poz8cc-9955b8a36-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, g33b4vqxzp4swx5bu27q-pxv1vf-89db7a111-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, g33b4vqxzp4swx5bv25q-pt8447-731cc407d-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, g33b4vsy3wdkax5bswnq-plqmrf-ff7289811-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net, g33b4vsy3wdkex5bsuoq-p56ka1-9bf23f300-clientnsv4-s.akamaihd.net,

Meanwhile, the average frame rate remained much the same, so either memory technology will allow you to squeeze the most out of an Alder Lake CPU in this game. Traditionally, JEDEC publishes new DRAM standards well ahead of their commercial fruition. As we know from unofficial sources, AMD, IBM, and Intel are all working on DDR5-supporting platforms for servers that will be available starting from late 2021 and onwards. Interestingly, Adobe Photoshop is more sensitive to memory bandwidth and this benefits DDR5 memory as they produced the best results. That said, DDR4-3600 and 3200 CL16 were not a great deal slower than most of the DDR5 kits, but if you're after maximum performance in this application, the faster the DDR5 memory the better. DDR5 Resources

To speed up design, development and qualification of next-generation DDR5-based platforms, Micron today launched its DR5 Technology Enablement Program together with Cadence, Montage, Rambus, Renesas, and Synopsys. Qualified participants of the program will be able to get DDR5 devices and modules, module components (DDR5 RCD, DDR5 DB, DDR5 SPD-Hub, DDR5 PMIC, DDR5 temperature sensor, etc.), data sheets, electrical and thermal models as well as consultation on signal integrity and other technical support. To speed up the delivery of your static content (e.g., images, style sheets, JavaScript, etc.) to viewers across the globe In a previous benchmark feature, we already took a look at DDR4-3600 vs. DDR5-6000 memory across 41 games and found that the newer and more expensive DDR5 memory was a mere 4% faster on average, though it was up to 20% faster in a few select titles. Both the DDR4 and DDR5 memory used in that testing was very expensive, so today we want to compare a range of memory kits covering a wider range of price points, all of which have been supplied by Corsair. Clearly DDR5 isn't worth it right now, but we already knew that. Pricing aside, DDR5 has little to offer over DDR4 in today's games with an Alder Lake processor for the most part. That being the case, budget conscious shoppers should only consider DDR5 at a 10%, or maybe a 20% price premium at most, when going for a flagship part like the Core i9-12900K.

For those wanting to upgrade their DDR4 kits to DDR5, there are a couple of benefits that the later brings to the table. clienttons-s.akamaihd.net, 684dd305.akstat.io, 684dd306.akstat.io, 684dd307.akstat.io, 684dd308.akstat.io, 684dd309.akstat.io, 684dd30a.akstat.io, 684dd30c.akstat.io, 684dd30d.akstat.io, 6852bd07.akstat.io, 6852bd08.akstat.io, 6852bd09.akstat.io, 6852bd0a.akstat.io, 6852bd0b.akstat.io, 6852bd0c.akstat.io, 6852bd0d.akstat.io, 6852bd0e.akstat.io, 6852bd0f.akstat.io, 6852bd10.akstat.io, 6852bd11.akstat.io, 6852bd12.akstat.io, As we just saw, DDR5 offers a 3% performance boost overall, but here we can see that gains were as large as 20% in games such as Far Cry 6 and Bright Memory. Other games to show strong gains include Watch Dogs Legion, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, The Riftbreaker, and Fortnite, to name a few. Fortnite also saw some benefit to using DDR5 memory, though for the most part the margins were less impressive. We did see a 12% boost to the 1% lows at 1080p, with a 6% improvement for the average frame rate and this was reduced to 5% at 1440p and then nothing at 4K.Depending on the games you play, DDR5 memory can offer little to no performance gain, and this will be true for most titles. The best performing examples show up to a 20% boost which is significant, and here we're comparing premium DDR4-3600 memory to premium DDR5-6000, with the DDR5 kit coming in at a ~70% price premium. But wait... Raptor Lake will support DDR4 memory, and while it's possible DDR5 will be of more benefit in a year, it's still not going to be massive and gamers will almost always end up GPU limited in games, rather than CPU limited. The big issue with this future-proof argument is the same as before, they hinge on the investment paying off in the long run with very few short-term advantages. In total, we have nine 32GB memory kits from the Vengeance LPX, Vengeance RGB RT, Vengeance RGB Pro and Dominator Platinum RGB series, covering DDR speeds from 2400 right up to 6200. We used all default timings for each kit, and have labeled graphs with the primary timings for each one. We've simply loaded XMP on the MSI Z690 Tomahawk DDR4 and DDR5 motherboards, and in two instances manually adjusted the gear mode to show gear 1 and gear 2 performance. Then with DDR5 we see that despite the much higher operating frequency, latency doesn't improve over what we see with DDR4 and this is because the Alder Lake memory controller can't run at a 1:1 ratio with the DRAM, forcing us to use gear 2 mode for all DDR5 testing. Even at 6200, we're still looking at a latency of 63ns, which is higher than even DDR4-3200 CL16 memory. So for now DDR5 will thrive in applications and games that require big memory bandwidth and aren't as sensitive to latency. Moving to 1440p neutralizes the test results with the exception of the gear 2 mode for the DDR4-2400 memory which dropped the average frame rate by 13%.
